Farmette is a small farm, marketplace, bakery + cafe in New Buffalo, Michigan. Our core mission is to support 100% sustainable food culture. We love our small business community along the shores of Lake Michigan and aim to uplift and enhance our unique area. We are an inclusive marketplace carrying local and sustainable produce, flowers, coffee, prepared foods, home goods and more. 

As the Chef, you'll take the lead on building our culinary program by keeping our marketplace stocked with fresh, gorgeous and seasonal prepared foods from our on-site farm and local producers. This includes salads, dips, snacks, appetizers and more. Applicants with a background in private chef and/or catering experience are encouraged to apply. Tons of opportunity for growth as we expand our culinary program.

Responsibilities

You’ll collaborate with Farmette’s founder, Katie Burdett, along with the entire small Farmette team. 

  • Lead our prepared foods program. Cook year-round prepared foods recipes along with seasonal specials. This includes salads, dips, snacks, appetizers and a wide array of other specials.
  • Work with sustainably produced + preferably local products.
  • Ordering + shopping for ingredients + supplies within Farmette’s budget.
  • Maintain a positive, friendly, calm + welcoming environment for all staff, customers and vendors.
  • Maintain quality + consistency of culinary program.
  • Keep in mind a low-waste operation and be open to minimizing food waste.
  • Keep a clean, sanitary workspace, storage + refrigeration.
  • Accept deliveries, check for accuracy of orders.
  • Keep an updated recipe book of Farmette’s recipes both in Google Drive and printed on-site. 
  • Communicate and coordinate with all farmette departments about inventory, customer feedback, etc.
  • Work with guest chefs on occasion
  • Keep the commercial kitchen in compliance with all local health codes and manage inspections with MDARD.
  • Other related assignments as necessary.

Requirements

  • At least 1 year of culinary management experience, preferably working with vegetables, farm-fresh produce and seasonal items.
  • Learn2Serv certifications for working in + managing others in the kitchen.
  • Passion for working with sustainably produced + local products and utilizing surplus.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work in a team-driven environment. We are a respectful and positive environment.
  • Reliability a must.
  • Able to work independently, focused and self-driven.
  • Detail oriented.
  • Open to feedback with the understanding that the whole team is working towards the same goal.
  • Keep a positive and professional attitude with co-workers, customers + vendors.
  • Be able to handle the physical work of being on your feet, walking, talking + cleaning. 
  • Occasionally lift and move up to 50 lbs.

  • Maintain a positive, friendly, calm + welcoming environment for all staff, customers and vendors.

As the Grower, you'll take the lead on producing gorgeous, nutritious and high-quality greens, herbs, flowers + microgreens from our on-site farmette and greenhouse.

Responsibilities

You’ll collaborate with Farmette’s founder, Katie Burdett, along with the entire small Farmette team. 

  • Participate in all aspects of food and flower production with a focus on salad mixes, microgreens, herbs + flowers.
  • Maintain the farm, greenhouse, landscaping, planters and general outdoor area.
  • Production includes seeding, weeding, fertilizing, watering, harvesting, post harvest handling/washing and packing.
  • Keep all tools, hoses, buckets and general farm supplies in clean, tidy + working order. Tools are cleaned and put away everyday at the end of the day.
  • Follow Farmette’s crop plan and record keeping procedures.
  • Follow the principles of Integrative Pest Management for a no-till and no-spray operation.
  • Stock the marketplace with products from the farm and local farmers. 
  • Maintain a positive, friendly, calm + welcoming environment for all staff, customers and vendors.
  • Keep a clean + sanitary workspace 
  • Other duties as assigned


Requirements

  • At least 1 year of year-round food production experience, preferably in the Great Lakes growing region.
  • Great communication + interpersonal skills.
  • Passion for high-quality food production in coordination with soil health, carbon sequestration and general Earth-positive growing practices.
  • Familiarity with the USDA Organic Certification and/or Regenerative Organic Certification best practices.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work in a team-driven environment. We are a respectful and positive work environment.
  • Reliability a must.
  • Able to work independently, focused and self-driven.
  • Detail oriented and observant.
  • Open to feedback with the understanding that the whole team is working towards the same goal.

Will you be open year-round?

We plan to stay open year-round with some small breaks sprinkled in. We keep our newsletter,website and social media up-to-date on our current hours.

Can I host my event at Farmette?

Farmette is able to occasionally host casual private events with a guest capacity of 50 people. Please fill out this form to get the conversation started.

Can I pre-order items from Farmette - like your bread?

We are currently not accepting pre-orders of any kind.

Is the farm organic?

We are not certified organic but we do use all the same growing practices. We are no-till, no-spray and always Earth-friendly. Feel free to ask us any specific questions!

Will farmette donate to my event/fundraiser?

Thank you so much for thinking of farmette. At this time we have already allocated our donation budget for 2025 and are no longer accepting donation requests.
